It's pronounced "n-wahr". It's a French word that comes from the term "film noir", which means "black cinema".
Even if you're not familiar with the term, you're probably familiar with the basis: black-and-white movies from the 1940's and 1950's featuring tough guy detectives who have to solve a crime while steering clear of a dangerous woman.
It's simply a cool, artistic, unique way to have your portraits (high school senior; musician, fighter...) done.
